My name is Gerry Welling, and I am running for State Representative in Michigan’s 78th
district. The honest and hard-working people
of Southwest Michigan need someone of the same
character who truly represents their interests in the Statehouse, and I am that
person. I will be running as a Democrat,
though were it an option, I would have run as an American, as that is a label
that I accept wholeheartedly.
My wife and I have made our home in
Niles, where we are raising five children ranging in age from 1 to 21. I’ve spent 35 of my 40 years right here in
the Michiana area, where I’m currently employed as a fire and life-safety
inspector. I am not a politician – in fact
my degree is in English – but I do possess reason and common sense, and those
are two things we need more of in government these days. I plan on bringing those and many other
qualities to bear for the people of District 78, and together I believe we can
change the landscape in Lansing. Three
things topping my long list of priorities:
making our education system the pride of the state, making the area more
attractive to business through a balanced and fair incentive package, and leaving
a little more money in everyone’s pockets each month by re-thinking and
reviewing outdated laws and regulations.
As my firmly conservative father
said when we were discussing me running for this office, “You will find we have
more in common than you think.” He was
right, and using that statement as my motto, I intend to make this district a
leader in the great State of Michigan .
We need to focus on the things that
unite us, remove obstacles to achieving our goals, and set our minds to making Michigan a destination –
for business, for tourism, and for good families looking for an exceptional
place to raise their children.
